Here are some of our most frequently asked questions to help you learn general information about River School, admissions, and tours.
River School enrolls children ages 2 months to 6 years with a fairly even split of boys and girls. Our families currently represent more than 15 countries and come from different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, marital statuses, and experiences.
We run year round. School hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at our Newport, Exchange Place, and Warren locations, and from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at our Westside location.
Each location has more than 7,000 square feet of space that includes bright, comfortable classrooms with large windows, a library, and dramatic play and block areas. Each location also has easy access to nearby playgrounds.
Infants – 1:4, toddlers – 1:5, and preschoolers – 1:10.
River School – Westside (NYC) is licensed by the New York City Department of Health. Jersey City locations – Newport, Exchange Place, and Warren – are all licensed by the State of New Jersey Department of Children and Families.
Each morning, parents are encouraged to stay until their child feels at ease and both the teachers and parents agree it is the right time to separate – this can range from a few days to a couple of weeks and depends on each individual child.
Throughout July and August, the preschool program includes field trips, swimming, sports, and special projects involving science, nature, art, and dramatic play.
Yes – parents are invited to participate whenever they’d like: by chaperoning class trips, reading stories, helping with special projects, and more. We also invite parents to attend workshops throughout the year.
Not at this time, but once we’ve offered you a spot for enrollment, we will ask for your first month’s tuition payment to hold your child’s spot.
You can apply at any time. River School enrolls children year round. But to help ensure we have the space when you need it, we recommend applying as far in advance of your desired start date as possible. Keep in mind that we tend to have the highest number of new enrollments and the highest demand in the month of September.
Enrollment is first come, first served, and is based on availability.
Typically, we will know whether we have an opening for your child one to two months in advance of the start date. We will notify you as soon as we’ve confirmed a spot for your child. We also may contact you with an enrollment offer that differs slightly from your request, such as an alternate start date or schedule. If you accept, you’ll still have priority to get your preferred schedule once it’s available. If you can’t accept, we’ll put your child back on the list until we can offer you what you need.
No. Once your child is accepted at River School, you are guaranteed a place until your child leaves for kindergarten.
Yes, once you have one child enrolled at River School, you will have priority for enrollment for all siblings.
Enrollment is offered on a first come, first served basis, so the only way to improve your child’s chances is to apply as early as possible.
No appointment is necessary between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The best times to visit are between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and between 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., as the children eat lunch and rest midday. We recommend calling in advance to check that there are no special events that might interfere with our ability to host your visit of the school.
Please feel free to call and make an early morning or late afternoon appointment; we will do our best to accommodate your schedule.
Your 30-minute tour will give you a chance to see the school and classrooms and learn more about River School. We will answer any questions you have and provide you with an application and other informational paperwork.
